Description

Hcc / w04596 Paisley Robe Paisley on cream colored wool. Closed at front with 2 frogs. Pockets are slits bordered with paisley. Exquisitely made. Roland Howard bequest Sept. Aug. 1988. Man's caftan robe of twill-woven cashmere, finely embroidered with traditional paisley motifs in the borders around the neck, down the center front opening, around the bottom edge, and around the side slits. The robe is cream-color, with predominately red paisley motifs; other colors incorporated into the woven designs are green, yellow, and black. The sleeves are cut one with the caftan's body. The center front opening fastens with two ball-and-loop toggles, mounted under circular medallions, needle-woven with a star design in silk threads matching the colors of the paisley borders. A wrapped tassel extends from the back of the medallions. A pocket on each side of the caftan is edged with the embroidery. The caftan is lined with brown cotton in the body, and green silk around all of the edges. LZB 7/8/08
