Description

HCG / w00866 Black taffeta cape trimmed with black beads, lace and fringe. Donor: Wilson 1969 Woman's shoulder cape of black silk faille, trimmed with black bobbin lace and black beading around the round neckline. The bottom edge is trimmed with black ribbon fringe headed by a beaded and corded braid. A row of corded and beaded braid is stitched down the center back. The cape has a dropped shoulderline and center front opening that fastens with a hook and thread eye in the center. The lining is plain-woven black silk pieced out across the back with a brown/black silk (and cotton?). There are three pink cross stitched worked at the lower corner of the left side of the front.

This is an example of a luxury item that may have only been affordable to members of the merchant class. It was likely worn by the mother of Georgia Johnson Wilson, who was the wife of J. Birkbeck Wilson and mother of the museum's founder J. Howard Wilson.
