Description

HL / w04396 / PH Glass camphene lamp - base broken. Camphene was refined turpentine and highly explosive, thus the wick tubes were long to prevent the flame from reaching the camphene. Came into use c. 1845-50. [In pencil: Burned without chimney.] Found in Perkins House. American flint glass whale oil lamp font, separated from their bases. c. 1800-10.
