Description

HS / w01109 Pillow front. Needlework done by Ann Eliza Birkbeck Wilson. Approx. 20 1/2 " square design in red, greens, cream, purple, black. Given by Ellenore Doudiet March 1992. Canvaswork pillow worked in cross stitches in Berlin wool. The design of the canvaswork is a mosaic design of octagonal tiles in dark red with a white snowflake-like design, alternating with a gray tile with a pale pink snowflake. The tiles are sashed with green outlined in black, with cross designs at the intersections. The pillow is backed with green rayon.

This is an example of an item that was likely created out of leisure. Leisure time was more common within merchant and other prestigious classes, as servants and/or enslaved people would be tasked with various household chores. Instead of this labor, the schedules of wealthy women would be more likely filled with hobbies, social visits, and other leisurely activities.
