Quilt. Made in squares and sewed together with sashes. Multi-colored with white backing.
19th Century hand made, much worn, repaired with successive patches machine sewn. Binding and strip across one end (white fabric, fine blue strip) removed 1990.
Pieced quilt with block design of a cross over a circle, with 2 " wide sashing between blocks. (This block is not included in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns.) Straight set; block size is approx. 12 " square. Piecing is hand stitched; the binding, which is a maroon calico set on straight grain, is machine-stitched. 36 total blocks.
The back is plain muslin. Inked in one corner: "Hibbert." Quilting thread matches color of fabrics on face; pattern follows pieced pattern, at 7 - 8 stitches per inch., lzb, 8/31/07Interpretative Labels

This is an example of an item that was likely created out of leisure. Leisure time was more common within merchant and other prestigious classes, as servants and/or enslaved people would be tasked with various household chores. Instead of this labor, the schedules of wealthy women would be more likely filled with hobbies, social visits, and other leisurely activities.
