Context

John Little Leonard (1954-1930) created a series of drawings of Willimantic streets as they stood in 1860. The specific date at which these drawings were completed is unknown though it was likely in the late 19th century. Some of these drawings were done looking at the houses while others, in cases where the houses had changed, he drew from memory. Leonard was an only child. He married Fanny Babcock and died on Jan. 31 (his birthday) in 1930. Leonard was a florist and pharmacist who owned his own shop. The sketches were on brown wrapping paper, drawn in pencil.
