Description

A World War II government issued first aid packet, Carlisle Model. There were a number of variants of the Carlisle Model first aid packet over the course of the war but this was the first to be made of "Tenite" plastic (to conserve brass and/or tin for other war efforts) and to include the Sulfanilamide Shaker Envelope which was to be sprinkled over the wound before the bandage was applied to prevent infection. Acme Cotton Products Co., Inc. received the commission from the government for the dressing. The front of the packet, in raised letters, says FIRST AID PACKET U.S.GOV'T. CARLISLE MODEL (TO OPEN PULL TAPE) RED COLOR INDICATES BACK OF DRESSING PUT OTHER SIDE NEXT TO WOUND ACME COTTON PRODUCTS CO., INC. NEW YORK, N.Y. The back of the packet says CRYSTALLINE SULFANILAMIDE and there is a white label over it with the handwritten name "Burke" Packets like these were distributed to soldiers to be used on the battlefield until medics arrived. The pressed brass seal has rust on one corner but the packet is otherwise in good condition.
