Context

According to the 1885-86 Willimantic Street Directory, E. W. (not H. N.) French and Nelson W. (again, not H. N.) French were sewing machine agents in Willimantic, with a place of business at 96 Main Street. E.W. French resided at 350 Main Street, and Nelson W. French resided on Coventry Road. In the 1896 directory, Edward W. French and Nelson W. French are still listed as sewing machine agents, with a place of business at 784 Main Street, and residing at 17 Winter Street and West Main Street, respectively. (west Main Street and Coventry Road were different names for the same street.) Willimantic's street numbers were revised c. 1890. In 1897, 790 Main Street was a small wooden building, no longer in existence, just east of the Franklin Block, on the south side of Main Street, in the heart of Willimantic's business center.
