A wooden box with hand carved flowers on the top. Inside a thin printed piece of paper is glued to the bottom of the box. It is a guarantee for a ring made by the Ostby & Barton Company. It certifies the accompanying ring (not included) to be a cultured pearl set in sterling silver. The guarantee is stained and torn and one section of it is no longer attached. The box itself is in excellent condition.
Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton founded the Ostby & Barton Company in Providence, RI in 1879 and quickly rose in fame and notoriety. Their "O-B" mark on jewelry was well known and respected.
Ostby and his daughter were both aboard the Titanic when it sank on April 15th, 1912. She survived aboard a lifeboat, but he perished on board the ship. Nevertheless the company with his name continued into the 1950s.
