Name/Title
Clark's Thread Dispenser Box with Girl Design c.1890Entry/Object ID
2024.21.3Description
An octagonal wooden thread dispenser box with six spots for thread and a printed illustration of a little girl on top. The eyelets are bone and are each labeled with a different number or weight of thread (36, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80). Inside are six wooden spindles, each of which would have held a spool of thread of the weight corresponding to the numbered eyelet in front of it. The thread could then be pulled through the eyelet to be used. There is one painted wooden spool currently in the box which could possibly be original to it. The box was made for Clarks Mile End Spool Cotton, sold by Thomas Russell of New York, around 1890. It is in fairly good condition with the scuffing around the edges and chipping of the top design.Collection
