Two two books are embossed identically with a picture of the bank and "WILLIMANTIC SAVINGS INSTITUTE/ INCORPORATED 1842/ WILLIMANTIC, CONN." on the front. the leather covered edge says "BOOK of THRIFT" and features a column with wings at the top, and the roman numeral VIII at the bottom. The other edges are plain brass, the top with a slot for coins and notes, the side with a keyhole for opening, and on the bottom is written "BANKERS UTILITIES CO./ SAN FRANCISCO/ U.S.A./ PATENTED/ JULY, 3, 1923"Use
Coin banks like these could be purchased from the bank itself, to be filled with coins and notes and potentially hidden among one's personal library disguised as a book. Although there is a keyhole in the side of the bank, the key would not have been given to the customer, but rather kept at the bank so that when the coin bank was full, the owner could bring it to the bank to be opened and to have the money deposited.Collection
