2023.40.1Description
Blue and gold ceramic mug bearing the seal of the Willimantic State College. Presented to Richard Nassiff when he served on the college's Board of Directors. The college was called the Willimantic State College from 1959 until 1966. It was founded in 1889 as the Willimantic Normal School, located in rented space on Main Street in Willimantic, during the height of the Gilded Age. In 1894, the school moved to its own building on the corner of Windham and Valley streets. In 1937, it changed its name to the Willimantic State Teachers' College. In 1959 it became the Willimantic State College, in 1966 Eastern Connecticut State College, and in 1988 Eastern Connecticut State University. According to the 1962 Willimantic street directory, Richard L. Nassiff and his wife Eleanor lived at 325 Prospect Street, only a few blocks from the college in Willimantic's desirable Prospect Hill neighborhood. Nassiff was the president of Nassiff Arms, Inc., a sporting goods store on Willimantic's Main Street (794 Main). His ancestors had migrated to Willimantic from Syria/Lebanon.Use
While the mug could be used for drinking beverages, it was probably intended to be displayed as memorabilia.Collection
