Teal Velvet and Copper BoxEntry/Object ID
2025.100.1Description
A pressboard box covered in teal velvet with cardboard and copper detailing. The inside is pleated seafoam green satin with a hinged flap featuring a number of channels through which something the size of a pencil might be slipped.
The velvet is rubbed off on most protruding corners, and there are a few places, namely the lid, where the copper is flaking off the formed cardboard underneath. The latch would once have had a metallic flap that fitted over the peg on the bottom half of the box but it is missing.
In the Victorian era, boxes like this were referred to as "caskets" because of their pleated fabric inner lining.Collection
