Metcalf Fabric Sample BooksEntry/Object ID
2025.52.1Description
Two sample books from the Metcalf Company, a selling agent for Wanskuck Mills of Providence, RI. One book, labeled book 5, is filled with colorful samples of whipcord fabric. Whipcord is a durable cotton fabric used mostly for outdoor fabrics, pants, and workers' garments. It is a common alternative to duck cloth. The other book, labeled book 6, is filled with a few black and navy samples of clergy fabric. As the name suggests, clergy fabric refers to fabric used to make the clothing worn by priests or other members of the clergy. Each sample in both books bares a sticker with the Metcalf logo as well as the catalog number for the fabric, the fabric's width and weight, and the company's address, 1450 Broadway New York, NY. The Metcalf company later became Metcalf Brothers and Company. Wanskuck Mills were founded in Providence, RI in 1862 and grew as a textile company until 1957 when they stopped creating textiles, though the company continued to exist as a conglomerate.Collection
