January and Wood Company Boxes of Maysville Spool WarpEntry/Object ID
2025.99.1Description
Three brown carboard thread boxes with black and red writing from the January and Wood Company, including a number of spools of thread. The boxes are torn in various places but are mostly intact. Two of the boxes contain a few spools of grey thread and the third box is full of spools of beige thread.
The January and Wood company operated out of Maysville, KY and was active from 1851 to 2003. They were a cotton mill whose production focused on home weaving needs for cloth and rugs, as well as all-purpose string. One side of each box is dedicated to a call for weavers to join the Maysville Guild, also known as the Maysville Guild of Home Weavers. Members of the guild received a periodical called The Shuttle with tips and techniques for home weaving.Collection
