2025.60.1Description
Two Corticelli sample books for Nonotuck and Italian silk machine twist and embroidery silk threads. The front of each booklet states they are specifically directed toward glove manufacturers. One is labeled Card No.24 D, the other as Card No.10537. Card 24 D features one full column of neutral colored thread tassels as well as a smaller extra flap of slightly more varied colors. Card 10537 features two columns of looped thread samples in neutral colors, as well as an extra flap of another full column of samples. The Corticelli company was established in 1855 as the Nonotuck Silk Company. Banking on the popularity of Italian products, they gave a few of their thread lines Italian names, including "Corticelli." The name became so popular it replaced the name of the company entirely in 1922. After WWI and the advent of synthetic silks, the company was in decline and so merged with Belding-Heminway to become Belding-Corticelli in 1930.Use
