ATCO Willimantic Six Cord BoxEntry/Object ID
2025.101.7Description
An empty box of Willimantic Six Cord thread from the American Thread Company, formerly the Willimantic Linen Company. The Willimantic Linen Company established the Willimantic textile mills in the mid 19th century, then in 1898 they were purchased by the Coats corporation which turned them into their subsidiary the American Thread Company. The lid of the box features a blue engraving of the Willimantic mills and says that the thread is good for both hand and machine sewing. In very small text on the border it names The American Thread Company as successor of the Willimantic Linen Company. This box, therefore, was likely created shortly after the sale of the mills to Coats and the following name change. In the bottom of the box is pasted a paper with an engraving of a spool of thread with wings and the text "This is an American thread the product of home industry/ Willimantic STAR thread" The base of the box has the same engraving and reads "Willimantic six cord spool cotton for sale by all leading dealers" On the inside of the lid is a faded black rectangular stamp with the letters W, D, D, and E. The box itself is in poor shape, stained and torn in several places, though in general the text is still clear and legible.Collection
