Spinning Bobbins, IndustrialEntry/Object ID
2024.7.01Description
Two c. 19th-century wooden industrial spinning bobbins, for use in spinning machines (spinning frames). Flanges are wood covered with brass. Made of a hardwood. Varnished and polished. Wood a single, solid piece.Use
While today's spinning frames use steel bobbins, older spinning machines used bobbins made of hard wood, sanded and polished. As thread or yarn was drawn and spun, it was wound onto spinner bobbins. When the bobbins became full, the spinners removed them from the machines and replaced them with empty ones. Doffers (also called bobbin boys or bobbin girls) carried the full bobbins on to the next step of manufacturing.Collection
