Priscilla Spinning Wheel 1920sEntry/Object ID
2025.66.1Description
A small (about 6") working spinning wheel made of wood. It has a small piece of canvas on the bottom to secure the pedal, on the underside of which is stamped "made in Czechoslovakia." The wheel comes in a box identifying it as a Priscilla spinning wheel. This is in reference to the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, The Courtship of Miles Standish, part of which is quoted on the box. The box also notes that this item comes from the A.S. Burbank Pilgrim Book and Art Shop of Plymouth, MA. The shop was active between 1872 and 1932. While sturdy enough, the box is water and mildew damaged, the spinning wheel inside is in excellent condition.Use
A toy like this might have been purchased as a souvenir when coming to Plymouth, MA, famous as a landmark for the English pilgrims.Collection
