Y&S Stick Licorice DisplayEntry/Object ID
2025.92.1Description
A full 15 count cardboard box of Y&S licorice sticks with cardboard two pack sleeve. The sleeve was intended to hold a second 15 count box which is not included. All of the individual boxes are unopened and still have the licorice inside. This two pack would have been purchased by retailers, and the 15 count box put out on a display counter for customers to purchase. The sleeve ensures retailers that the licorice sticks are "Profitable!" Although licorice is considered a candy today, these sticks were promoted as relief for coughs caused by colds. The Y&S company began in 1845 as Young & Smylie, then with two other companies became the National Licorice Company in 1902. They introduced the Twizzler, a spiraled version of their standard licorice stick, in 1929 but it didn't really gain popularity until the 1960s. Hershey purchased Y&S in 1977 and altered the Twizzler design to become the one we know today.Collection
