2024.57.1Scope and Content
A collection of antique children's wooden alphabet blocks. From left to right, c1890, c1910, c1930, c1950, c1970. The last two styles are undated. The blocks are all heavily worn with some of the sides nearly or completely unreadable. The concept of alphabet blocks dates back to the 16th century. They are thought to have been mainly popularized by philosopher John Locke and his paper "Some Thoughts Concerning Education," which emphasizes the incorporation of learning into play. Parents and educators still use blocks like these to teach young children their letters.Collection
