Clark's Spinning Thread Dispenser Box c.1890Entry/Object ID
2024.21.5Description
A wooden cylindrical box which spins freely on its base. On the outside of the lid is a printed illustration of a young boy and girl. On the outside of the cylinder are numerous phrases written at an angle with lines in between. At the top it says "I should very much like to know your disposition, Sir?" and "What is your disposition?" and "The answers are in pairs - those in italics being for the ladies." On the base it says "Spin the box and refer to this indicator for answer," with an arrow in the middle. The "answers" range from flirtatious to melancholic. Inside the box, which is lined in blue velvet, are six metal spindles for thread. The top edge of the box is notched so that the thread could be pulled out with the lid on. The box was made for Clarks Mile End Spool Cotton, sold by Thomas Russell of New York, around 1890.Collection
