2016.1.1Description
Wedding gown from 1869, silk and silk velvet. Extra panel was added in back after garment was made with outer silk fabric, assumed to fit the wearer after the wedding, or another wearer. Dress was kept in family until it was donated to the museum in 2016. Panel added was not done nicely, and was hand stitched, folding the extra fabric into the lining. Dress is completely hand stitched, including basting stitches. Sleeves are lined with a waxed cotton, inner bodice with a satin-weave cotton blend, possibly raw silk. Horse hair was used to add the the back bustle of the skirt. It was determined, that due the different waistband, fabric was removed from the waistband to add to the back of the bodice and new waistband was machine stitched in, with what looks like a treadle machine. It seems as if top was modified to fit an 1890's look. Machine work was found in darts, horsehair bustle and other areas.Clothing/Dress/Costume Details
