Pocomoke AFS Set To Hear Snow Hill Exchangee Speak
The exchange student from Thailand, Miss Benjalak Huayrerai, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Pocomoke Chapter of the American Field Service (AFS) to be held at the Pocomoke High School auditorium Tuesday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m.
"Benjy", who is the 1977- 78 exchangee from the Snow Hill chapter, hails from Chiang Mai in Thailand where her father is chairman of the English Department of Mae Jo Agricultural Institute. She is sixteen and one in a family of two boys and two girls. A student this year at Snow Hill High School, her 'host' family are Sgt. and Mrs. Kirk Daugherty and Lois, a junior at SHHS and Mike, who attends Snow Hill Middle School. Sgt. Daugherty is with the Maryland State Police at Berlin and Mrs. Daugherty teaches school at the Berlin Middle School.
As anxious to share her own cultural heritage as she is to learn about Western cultures, "Benjy" will play the Thai harp, known as a kim, which she has often played on TV in her native land and will also demonstrate the classical Thai dances in which she is proficient. She will tell about Thai family life and about holidays and feasts in which Thai families take part.
Pocomoke Chapter president Mrs. Ann Glovier said January is AFS "Family Finding Month" and that the search is on for a suitable family to host the 1978- 79 AFS Exchange student. L. Ray Gladding is the Pocomoke Family Finder and should be contacted by anyone wishing more information on this interesting experiment in cultural exchange. Americans Abroad Coordinator is Sam Sipe, and Barbara Powers, an AFS returnee from South Africa is available to speak to groups and show slides of her exchange visit. Paul Brothers is the candidate for the 1978-79 exchange program from Pocomoke.
AFS Chapter meetings are always open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

"Benjy" as she is affectionately called by her American friends performed one of her native dances for the Pocomoke AFS Chapter. Done with lighted candles, the dance tells the story of star crossed lovers and is one which the students of Benjy's school performed for Queen Elizabeth when she visited Thailand.
