South African Student To Study In Snow Hill
Miss Sheila M. Mackenzie
SNOW HILL - The Snow Hill Chapter of the American Field Service has announced that Miss Sheila Margaret MacKenzie of Cape Town, S. Africa, will arrive in Snow Hill early in September to study in the Snow Hill High School for the coming school year.
Mis MacKenzie is the seventh exchange student to attend the Snow Hill High School. She will live with Mr. and Mrs. Gus Payne and their daughter, Becky, in their home near Snow Hill.
In Cape Town, Sheila lives with her parents and a brother. She is interested in tennis, hockey, squash or net ball, and photography. Her mother was born in England and Sheila has traveled to that country for extended visits. Her father is managing director of South African Gossard, Ltd., manufacturers of foundation garments.
Mr. and Mrs. Payne, owners of the local Western Auto, Inc., live in Nassawango on Beckyfield Farm. Becky Payne will be a senior this year in Snow Hill High School.
MISS MACKENZIE'S stay in the United States and her international scholarship have been made possible by the united efforts of the AFS in New York City, the AFS Chapter in Snow Hill, the Snow Hill Parent Teacher Assn., various service organizations in the area and the generosity and hospitality of the host family.
The Snow Hill AFS has not only brought Miss MacKenzie to the community but has sponsored the summer abroad trip for Miss Ann Sturigs of Snow Hill, who will soon return from the United Kingdom to begin her senior year in the high school.
Anyone interested in learning more about the AFS exchange program may contact any member of the local chapter. Members are Mrs. Richard E. Ward, and John C. Howard of Stockton, Mrs. Paul Hauck of Girdletree, Mrs. Cleveland Bounds and Mrs. Ralph Mason Jr., of Newark; Earl Taylor, Mrs. Sidney Northam, Miss Christine Lucas, Miss Grace Jones, W. O. Jones, Harold Phillips, and Louis Shockley, all of Snow Hill.
The chapter will accept applications for host homes for 1968-69 at any time, according to Mrs. Mason, president of the Snow Hill Chapter of the American Field Service.Collection
