THE EAGLE
Nuovo amico arrives
A new friend has been presented to the student body of SHHS as our AFS student for 1972-73 school year. Her name is Angela Sordano, and she hails from Turin, Italy, where her family includes a brother Settimo, 15 and a sister Concetta, 13. In America, Angela's home is with Roger and Faye Richardson and their two daughters Sandy, 17 and Donna, 14.
Angela enjoys swimming, winter skiing, painting, reading, and stamp collecting. She has expressed an interest in going out for basketball, softball, and the Senior Class Play.
When asked about the differences in the school systems here and those in Italy, she replied that they had no clubs sponsored by the school, or activities such as sports, band, and majorettes. These are sponsored by individual citizens who form associations for this reason. Instructors are paid to teach sports and coach the teams by these associations.
School in Italy is in session Monday through Saturday, so that the majority of dating provileges falls on Saturday nights. Sundays are spent with friends in several types of recreation.
The problem of drugs, which is widespread in this country, is virtually unheard of in Italy except in the slums of the largest cities.
When asked if there were any differences between the students of both countries, Angela said that students in this school have more responsibilities than students in Italy, but they also have more freedom in school. In Italy the kids seem older whereas here we constantly compete among each other.
