February 19th, 1942.
The Executive Council of Homemakers Clubs met on February 19th at the home of the new president, Mrs. Otis northam.
The Secretary Mrs. Dickerson was absent on account of sickness so Mrs. L. W. Warren was appointed as substitute.
Miss Kellar, Miss Walter, and fourteen members were present.
The Secretary's report was accepted as read.
The Treasurer reported a balance of $28.31.
Books on Parliamentary Law for the new Parliamentarian, Mrs. R. T. Grant, was discussed. Miss Kellar suggested one published by Washington Star by Haskins for 25¢ and Rules of Order by Roberts.
Mrs. Warren reported on membership drive carried in November 1941. Increase in membership of 40%. Spence outstanding club with an increase of 110%. Miss Kellar said Worcester came first in percentage of increase and Alleghany first in number of new members which was 208.
Mrs. Shockley, Food Chairman, reported food was still major subject, County Nutrition Committee was active, and that she had attended six food meetings since last Council report.
Mrs. Bradford, Clothing Chairman, said clothing was minor project this year and would not be studied until fall when reading of labels and study of substitute materials would be emphasized. Told interesting story of making over a coat.
Mrs. Horace Griffin, Home Furnishing Chairman, reported members are still doing things to improve furnishings and brighten the home, although subject is not carried as a project this year. Mrs. Gumm told of upholstering a love seat for beach cottage.
Mrs. Warren, Victory Garden Chairman, told of organization meeting held in Snow Hill with excellent response. Meetings are being held by homemakers in different sections of county to carry need of raising and preserving food for family use.
Mrs. Vincent, Music Chairman, said that we must continue to sing.
Mrs. Charles Hudson, Recreation Chairman, reported many of their games were outgrowth of demonstration or tied up with the demonstration. Recreation neglected in some of the clubs. She agreed to prepare and give to Miss Walter leaflet of games and Miss Walter agreed to have them typed and sent to each recreation chairman in the local clubs.
Mrs. Herman Ardis, Flower Garden Chairman, made a most interesting talk on value of her type hoe and told that work in vegetable garden would go a lot better if some bright blooming flowers were planted there.
Local Club Presidents Reports: Mrs. Warren, community club, reported growing very fast; organized in December; meeting twice a month in winter so can disband during summer.
Mrs. Gumm, Showell-Whaleyville Club - much war work and war contributions and growth in membership.
Mrs. Holloway - Salisbury Road - new members, interested in regular program.
Mrs. Stagg substituted for Mrs. Dickerson- president garden work, war work, contributions to war activities, new members, Farm Bureau auxiliary Discussion Group formed, close coordination with Home Demonstration work.
Mrs. Richardson, Snow Hill Club, reported war work, nutrition, $52.00 Red Cross - 47 members.
Program for spring meeting - a suggested program read by Mrs. Warren to include talks by Miss Walter and Council president - food, garden, writer and reading chairman - 2 minute reports by local presidents. Covered dish luncheon at Methodist Church, Snow Hill. No suggestion for P. M. speaker. Miss Kellar thought an army or FBI speaker would be interesting and maybe helpful to both us and them.
Secretary read letter from Miss Shelby to Miss Walter regarding machine clinic to be held March 19th and 20th, which conflicted with spring meeting date. Decided to ask if possible to hold it week following.
Bill presented by Treasurer:
Transportation of F. McKensey to Tri-County meeting in Salisbury, 1941, to Miss Walter - $5.00
Charts and chart material for victory garden and nutrition work - to Miss Walter - 3.06
Voted both bills be paid
Voted to pay dues to State Council - 10.00
Voted to give 4-H clubs in county - 10.00
Budget Chairman, Mrs. C. D. Gumm, estimated council expenses to be $60.00 as there are about 160 members, dues 40% per member.
Recommendations of Budget Committee carried. Local Club president notify their treasurer to pay same before May 1st.
President read list of committees. Secretary was asked to notify members regarding their committees. Also notify Spence Club regarding their dues.
Virginia Northam gave a most excellent summary of activities of 4-H clubs in county.
Miss Kellar in her talk said her topics were so closely related to our activities that it would really be a summary of the reports given.
Points touched were as follows:
Homemakers duty to build better homes and keep up morale
Plan budget and family expenses carefully
Plan for home recreation
Cooperate with Defense organization
Take as many training courses as you can; never was there a time when there was so much free education as at present Great need that consumer have a knowledge of quality and materials in her purchases
Must not forget young people and try to guide them in their thinking and principles
Told of Frederick County having a speakers' committee who could be called on by any organization to give them a 10 minute talk on nutrition
Closed with a few key sentences from Victory Gardens meeting held in Washington in December, one of which is - Mental health can be had in a garden program
Meeting closed with singing America the Beautiful, after which nutritious sandwiches and drinks were served.Creator
