Christmas Story In Brazil
In Brazil where there is little snow Santa Claus walks, but other than that the celebration of Christmas is very similar to the United States, says Nika Lindermann, the exchange student at Snow Hill High School.
Nika said that since there is no snow where she lives Santa Claus does not have his sleigh and reindeer. Her home is Porto Alegre, the capital of her state, which is a city of one million people.
According to Nika, her family has the traditional Christmas tree and exchanges presents like the people in the United States do.
The chief religion of the southern part of Brazil is Lutheran since the majority of the people there are of German descent. Nika said that the Christmas carol that is sung predominently is "Silent Night."
On Christmas Nika's family attends church. Afterwards one of the men in the neighborhood dresses like Santa Claus and distributes the presents to the family which are opened. The tree at her house is decorated about the same as here excepted that her family uses candles for lighting it.
She added that the weather is hot at this time of the year since it is summer there in- stead of winter.

This year Nika will celebrate Christmas with her American parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert C. LaMar, and her American sister, Jean, who live in Snow Hill.
CHRISTMAS. This year Nika Lindermann (right) will celebrate Christmas with her American sister Jean LaMar. However, this scene of the presents and the Christmas tree is familiar to Nika since she has them in her country.
