Mar 28 '68 Walk Together Talk Together CARINA June 1965 - June 1968 Many of you remember the friendly and outgoing girl who became a member of our family in August of 1964. After a busy year at Snow Hill High School she graduated with the class of '65. Then she had just a few short weeks to spend with us in Ocean City before we took her to Dover, Del, where show joined her bus group. With this group she toured the North Eastern United States for about three weeks ending in Washington D. C. Here all of the A. F. S. students who had spent the 64-65 school year in the United States gathered and met in the National Armory. There were 3,000 of them housed in the Washington area. In addtion to seeing all of the tourist attractions they had the opportunity of meeting President Johnson and his daughter Lynda on the White House lawn. Carina called us from Washington to tell us that although the sailing of the S. S. Seven Seas had been cancelled she was still going home by ship. There was an added bonus for Carina too, for she flew from Washington D. C. to Montreal, Canada where she spent one evening with her uncle, aunt and niece, Little Carina, before boarding the S. S. Rvndam for home. Upon her arrival in the Netherlands she was met by her family with whom she vacationed a few weeks along the North Sea before preparing to return to school. Her school is located in Urecht, about a 45 minute ride from her home, and offers classes from kindergarten through the college level. Since she had completed her High School work before coming to the United States Carina started at the college level, and during her first year she lived at home and rode back and forth on her new motorcycle, which was an 18th birthday present. Carina said she had celebrated her 18th birthday three times. First in March when the A. F. S. Club and local Chapter sponsored a party for her, second in Ocean City, on her actual birthday in June, when we had a small family celebration, and again on her return home when she received her motorcycle. After completing one year in her school Carina worked in a book store where she met many tourist during the summer of 1966. She also taught Dutch that summer to a group of A. F. S. students who had come to spend the year in the Netherlands. One of her students in the language camp was Michael Shultz who had just graduated from Stephen Decatur High School, and had met Carina during her stay with us. In August of 1966 she was seriously injured in an automobile accident, and was not able to return to her classes until November 1966. During this second year in school she lived in a room where she did her own cooking, and from which she could walk to her classes. She was able to pass all of her examinations and to complete her second year on schedule. We are pleased to know that she is fully recovered from the accident. This past summer our two oldest girls had the opportunity to spend some time with Carina and her family. They enjoyed seeing all of the tourist attractions in Holland, but most of all they enjoyed the time spent with the family, visiting Carina's grandmothers, her school and room, the small fishing villages where the people still wear their native costumes, and the Stock Exchange in Amsterdam where Carina's father works. They were surprised to learn that this was Carina's first visit to the Stock Exchange too. When it came time to leave, the girls were reluctant to part, but Carina promised that she would return to visit us in the summer of 1968. In Europe most of the responsibility for the A. F. S. program is in the hands of the A. F. S. Returnees, and Carina is very active in this organization. In addition to teaching in the language camp she is acting as counselor to two girls and two boys who are spending this year in the Netherlands. She has interviewed families who were applying for students, and also students who were applying to go abroad. This year she is also busy helping to plan the two day celebration to mark the 15th anniversary of A. F. S. in the Netherlands. This is to take place in November. In June of 1968 Carina expects to complete her examinations and receive her certificate which will enable her to teach kindergarten. She plans to teach a few years and then to return to school and learn to teach the handicapped children. This has always been her goal. We all look forward to the summer of 1968 when Carina will be with us again, but we are pleased and proud to know that whether here with us, or in the Netherlands, Carina will always be a member of our family.
