Description

Leaf-shaped blade (lacking point), the back covered almost to the point with a narrow brass strip. Baluster-shaped bolster with traces of engraving and gilding. Tapering handle of rectangular section made of small plates of ivory and black horn (? jet) of varying thicknesses, separated by brass shims and threaded over the tang. At the top is an ivory finial carved as two female human bare heads. Etched on each face of the base of the blade is a shaped panel with a foliated pediment, containing hatched arabesques and, on one face, an inscription, all very defaced, but retaining traces of gilding. The inscription, so far as it is legible, reads: FORM G....... DOWI(N?)....
