Name/Title

3/16 IN RAWL Expansion Bolt #2

Entry/Object ID

2026.1.36

Description

An expansion bolt with a screw top, also called split shank bolt. Only 3/16ths of an inch.

Use

Used with a hanger to attach to the rock

Context

This bolt was most likely used on the first ascent of the west face of Leaning Tower by Glen Denny, Warren Harding, and Al McDonald. The bolt is an expansion bolt with a screw top, made by RAWL industries. At the time, standard bolts were at least 1/4 inch, but interestingly these are only 3/16ths of an inch. This route was the only place in Yosemite that 3/16 bolts were documented being placed.
