Use

Pounded into stone to stand on and advance up the climb

Context

Used on the very first climbing trip to Yosemite Valley by the RCS over Memorial Day 1933. It bent on Upper Cathedral Spire which was steeper than Lunch Ledge on Washington Column the previous day.
