Description

A page from the Higher Cathedral Spire Notebook, recording the first ascent of the Lunch Ledge route on Washington Column, September 2, 1933.

Context

This is an original page from the Higher Cathedral Spire Notebook depicting the first ever rope climb in Yosemite. The first ascent of the Lunch Ledge route on Washington Column is shown and completed on September 2, 1933. The smallest picture is photographed on Higher Cathedral Spire, which was attempted, however the nails were bending and the group realized they need real pitons and carabiners to climb it, so they retreated. The notebooks were acquired in 1993 and were donated by Richard Leonard.
