Context

Royal Robbin's Left-handed Jumar. Mechanical rope ascender first introduced and employed in Yosemite by Royal and Tom Frost during their 1965 second ascent of the Dihedral Wall. Jumars are named after the Swiss Company of the same name. This is the first model of jumar. Prior to jumars, the way to ascend ropes was called a prusik.
