Description

A piton modified to be an Aid Climbing tool.

Use

To fit inside small cracks without having to place a piece of gear.

Context

Tom Rohrer aka "The Mad Bolter." He set up the Rohrer Rappel route down The Nose of El Capitan, which probably saved countless lives. He made his own gear, as well as modifying a Longware piton by heating it up and bending it into a ninety degree angle. It was then used as an aid climbing tool by sticking it into a thin crack and weighting it so that the device expands inside. This is the predecessor to the Leeper Cam Hook. Many speed climbers use the Cam Hooks to climb the face of El Capitan quickly, as they are easily dislodged once the weight is pulled off them.
