Philadelphia's Centennial Exhibition inspired many artists. Edmund Darch Lewis, a painter associated with the Hudson River School, studied landscape painting in Philadelphia with the artist, Paul Weaver. Lewis exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was later elected an associate of the Academy. His most technically acclaimed work came early in his career, before his focus changed to marine watercolors.
