Description

A personal scrapbook that belonged to Adelaide Herrmann. Leather-bound with a metal clasp, the personal scrapbook contains photographs, performance repertoire, and various ephemera detailing Adelaide's magic performance tours with her husband Alexander Herrmann, her nephew Leon Herrmann, and along with her solo acts dating from 1889 to 1899. Each item displayed on the pages are either taped or glued onto the scrapbook.

Use

The scrapbook was used by Adelaide to preserve a period of time in her personal history to view and reflect on after it was composed.

Context

Born Adelaide Scarez in England in 1853, Adelaide was originally a mime and serpentine dancer before marrying magician Alexander Herrmann in 1875. Adelaide was trained by Alexander and became his principal assistant, performing together throughout many tours both nationally and internationally. After her husbands death in 1895, Adelaide briefly performed together with her nephew, Leon Herrmann. Shortly after, Adelaide performed as a solo magician until 1928, in her 70's. Adelaide during her career had performed several illusions, her most well-known acts were her "Phantom Bride" "Noah's Ark" and bullet catching acts. She passed away in 1932 at the age of 79.
