Description

1994.021 "Caroline" Boat Type: Canoe Builder: Plycraft Length: 16' Beam: 30" Date Built: 1946 The Plycraft Company in Montreal Canada used WWII technology to build canoes of molded plywood. The same technology was used in furniture and other domestics and came to be a defining aesthetic of the 1950s. The shape of this boat is that of a classic double-ended paddling canoe. The boat was restored by donor Brad Coolidge in the mid 1980s, including replacement of some of the hull material. Mr. Coolidge replaced the original painted canvas mats with the current neoprene mats, and added the mahogany slats to the seats to replace the lost caning. Break in the port gunwale has been covered over with fiberglass. EVS 03 Note: since the above was written, additional archival material from the Coolidge estate has been received and filed with the accession records. DJM 1/2011
