Description

Large oak English hall clock. Columns on sides of bottom and top glass doors. Carved feet. Crest at top of clock. Elaborate floral carvings all over with florettes at top of clock and below face. At front bottom of clock is a rectangular brass plaque inscribed, " CINCINNATI TYPOTHETAE / TO / MAJOR AND MRS. H.C. MCDOWELL / IN COMMEMORATION OF THE VISIT OF THE / UNITED TYPOTHETAE OF AMERICA / TO / ASHLAND OCTOBR 23, 1891" Face of clock is gold with foral decorations around perimeter and inside inner silver metal ring containing the numbers. A small second face is contained within inner ring also. At top of face is chronograph [?] with features of moon and sun that turns with passing of time from night to day. Face is marked "Frank Hershede / Cincinnati." Face contains two dials, one for switching chimes off and on, marked "CHIMES / SILENT," and one for selecting type of chime, marked, "WHITTINGTON / WESTMINSTER." Bottom of case shows tubular bells, a three vial mercurial pendulum and brass weights clearly visible through glass door. Bells aer stamped, "TUBULAR BELLS PAT. NOV. 8, 1887 / WALTER H. DURFEE, PROV. RI." Glass door is etched in center with what is presumably Typothetae seal or emblem, a bird with the words, "CINCINNATI TYPOTHETAE / 1891."
