Rectangular box with ebony and ivory inlay. Hinged lid and lock. Outside of box has geometic and round designs. Inside lid and edge also has inlay. On bottom of box written in ink, "Presented by S. Simpson, Esq. of Farifax County, Virginia. To the Honorable Henry Clay of Ashland, KY June 28th, 1849".
