A dark head and shoulders image of Henry Clay facing to his right. Clay looks imiaciated, his face drawn to show every line. He is shown in jacket, vest, tie, and high collar. Written in pencil at top, "Proof before letters [20?]." At bottom of sheet,"[illegible] Proof before letters. Henry Clay." Plate marks evident around image. Pencil marks have been drawn in over eyebrows and collar (evident by looking at engraving under light at an angle).
