Multi-colored stitched child's sampler. With red and green flowers around perimeter, a verse at top and several pictures of birds and trees. A federal style house is shown at the bottom. The sampler is framed in ivory-painted wooden frame with a medallion in each corner and turned wood on the sides. On the backboard, written in pencil, "Frame made by Uncle in Scotland / was black. / Catherine Aitken Miller: made this at the / age 8 yrs. / April 1843 living in / Scotland with / Aunt Margaret Aitken who / cared for / her after 6 mos. old. / When her mother died she brought / family to America in 1848, but died on / boat of fever & Uncle Aitken cared / for children then./ This house is their home in Dunbar." Back of frame is lined with old newspapers.
