An 1837 handwritten letter by Henry Clay with free franking.
From Henry Clay to Sanford Bennet, June 23, 1837. In a two-page missive Clay provides Bennet with tutorial on securing high quality European Jacks and Jennettes. He ends the letter by encouraging Bennet to purchase an ass domestically and indicates that he has one Jack to sell himself. Clay was an active and serious importer of thoroughbred horses, sheep, cattle, and jack, and jannettes. Moreover, he possessed a national reputation for his expertise on asses. This is a prized letter with significant content.
