Description

Dark leather-covered hat box, gold-embossed on lid "Henry Clay / Ashland Kentucky." Lid at one time had four loops to hold a handle and for strap to secure lid to box, but only one loop remains. Securing strap is loose and now contained inside box. Strap has brass, shield-shaped fastener at one end with "Braman Patent" and two crowns stamped on it. The handle to the box is also contained inside, along with other loose pieces. On one side of box is a large hold which probably held the fastening device with which to secure the strap. On bottom of box is a brass metal band around the circumference with a raised star in the center. The inside of the box and lid is lined with wool batting and green silk. The box is designed to conform to the shape of the hat.
