Context

Precisely when the first Vergennes City Band formed is a bit of a mystery. At a meeting of band members in 1962, this question was put to Percy Currier, who had played in the band for 54 years. “There’s always been a band,” Currier replied. Newspaper articles going back before the Civil War show people in town — exclusively men in that era — played music together under various names: Vergennes Cornet Band, Union Band and Vergennes City Band. News accounts also suggest these bands sometimes struggled, disbanding or going dormant only to spring back to life. One of the times when the band went dormant was in the late 1920s.
