During the American Civil War, grapeshot was a type of anti-personnel ammunition used in cannons. It consisted of a cluster of small iron balls held together by a canvas bag or metal plates, resembling a bunch of grapes. When fired, the canvas wrapping disintegrated, scattering the iron balls and creating a shotgun-like effect at close range. This made it particularly devastating against massed infantry formations.Acquisition
