Description

The 124th New York Volunteer Infantry, the Orange Blossom Regiment, fought valiantly in the Army of the Potomac. Though considered elite, they suffered heavy losses at Devil’s Den during the Gettysburg battle on July 2, 1863. Regimental commanders Col. Augustus Van Horn Ellis and Maj. James Cromwell were killed in action. Their final commander, Col. Charles H. Weygant, authored a classic regimental history in 1877.
