Description
Orange County is situated on the west side of the Hudson River. Its area is about 760 square miles or 46,500 acres.
A portion of the county is rugged and mountainous. The Shawangunk range stretch across the western corner of the County. The central and northern parts are agreeably diversified with easyhills, and wide rich vallies. In the south eastern part are the elevated ranges of the Highlands of the Hudson, among the most noted summits of which, ate Butler Hill, the Crows Nest and the Bear Mountain. The first of these is elevate 1520 feet above the level of the Hudson River.
The Agriculture of the County ??? and dairies are widely celebrated for their excellence.
In the western extreme of the county are the Delaware, Neversink and Mongaup rivers; in the centre are the Wallkill and it tributaries. This stream rises in New Jersy and flows northerly into Ulster. In the eastern part are Murders Creek and is branch the Otterkill. The Ramapo river a branch of the Passaic of New Jersey rises in the southern part and flows into Rockland County.
The celebrated fortress of West Point is situated in Orange County as also Forts Putnam, Montgomery and many other well know military positions of Revolutionary history.
County Buildings are located at Goshen and Newburg, the half shire towns. The former is pleasantly situated in the interior of the County and the latter has a beautiful site on the banks of the Hudson.
