Indicted Two Years After Still Raid
Indictments charging nine Orange, County men with operating an illicit still on the John E. Tuthill farm near Chester more than two years ago were returned by a Federal Grand Jury in New York City, last week.
The evidence on which the indictments were based was obtained by agents of the Alcoholic Tax Unit of the Internal Revenue Department, New York State Police and city police of Middletown in a spectacular raid on the Tuthill farm on the night of June first, 1942.
Named in the indictments are: John B. Tuthill, owner of the farm; his father-in-law, Daniel Ryerson, Jr.; Charles F. Carr, operator of a garage in Middletown; Charles Colacicco, Middletown; and five other men, Ernest Barberio, Thomas J. Rometo, Frank Rometo, George B. Hess and Albert Ciaravino, whose addresses were not given.
Only three of the nine men under indictment were taken into custody at
the time of the raid. They were Tuthill, Ryerson, and Colacicco, who at the time were jointly, charged with participation in the illegal operation
of a still. The other six were brought into the case through subsequent investigation by the, internal Revenue agents.
