After World War I, when the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania faced alarming financial conditions, Sarah Logan Wister Starr, a prominent philanthropist and socialite, became President of the Board of Corporators. The College and Hospital were placed under the unified control of a single Board. Under Mrs. Starr’s guidance, the Executive Committee assumed responsibility for the College’s finances, and carried out a financial reorganization to ensure solvency. Astutely, Mrs. Starr established the right of the College to share in appropriations made by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, providing a major source of support.
In 1926, Mrs. Starr and Dean Martha Tracy combined their wisdom, spirit, and energy to launch a $1,500,000 fundraising campaign to erect the College and Hospital on Henry Avenue, which opened in 1930.
